I downloaded the 4.2.99.3 tagged code from cvs last week to test it out, and I have had nothing but problems getting it to work with my system.

I have an IBM Thinkpad A31 running linux 2.4.21-pre2 which has an ATI Radeon 7500 Mobility.

I compiled X with gcc 3.2.1

I have tried using the same XF86Config file that works with 4.2.1 as well as creating a new one from scratch.

When using the 'radeon' video driver, my display will become unuseable. The screen shows a response to input in that it will change when I change consoles (ctrl-alt-fx), but it is just a garbled mess of a picture.

When I start X with a low resolution (640x480 or 800x600), the X server displays properly, but the display garbles if I change to a text console (crtl-alt-fx). The display looks fine again when I return to X (ctrl-alt-f7), but upon terminating the X session, the only way to fix the system is to reboot it.

When I start X at my normal resolution (1400x1050), X starts in this garbled mode.

The 'vesa' driver does not have this problem, but it has a different problem in that upon terminating the X server, it destroys the ANSI coloring of my console. It seems to me that hilited ANSI text appears as purple, and non-hilited ANSI text appears black.
