Hello I'm trying to get Xfree86 to run on my brand new Dell. Unfortunately it
came with an on-board video card (Intel Extreme Graphics). I've tried just
about everything I could reading message lists and googling around.
I've installed the latest Xfree86-4.2.99.3,
I've upgraded to the latest RedHat 7.3 kernel (2.4.18-19.7.x).
I've been to intel's website which suggestes that I set the pre-allocated
video board memory to 8MB. I've downloaded the latest BIOS-Flash for my
motherboard and it doesn't give me an option to change the pre-allocated
video.
I've tried several video modes and the only one that seems to sort of work for
a second is 640x480 w/ 256 colors. I type startx and (it seems to grab it's
options from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc) and i see a very basic x-windows set up
with several windows. If I type exit in the top window X exits gracefully with
no errors. If I type startx again I get a blank (black) background with
nothing visible. If I type exit again, X quits without errors.
I've tried the VESA drivers I've tried the i810 generic drivers that ccame
with XFree86-4.2.99.3.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'd really appreciate any help anyone
could provide. Thanks in advance
