The install and setup program uses a framebuffer device for the GUI, and it looks like that is what your XF86Config file is set up for. I would check to make sure you have an appropriate vga=xxx entry in your /etc/lilo.conf file, and consult
http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/Framebuffer-HOWTO.html#toc5 if you need any additional help getting the framebuffer working. You need to have the correct modules compiled for your kernel (which I'm sure you do, since they were used during install, but maybe there is still some configuration to be done, like I mentioned above) or support compiled in statically. Test the setup with the lower resolutions just to make sure your configuration works and then raise it to whatever is acceptable for the display.
