For whatever reason the X configuration does not seem to have been
updated.

Your original setup used XFree86 3.x and the new one uses XFree86 4.x but
you still have the config file for 3.x -- I think.

Red Hat has a configuration utility that will help you.  You can also
search back in the archives for this mailing list (you won't have to go
more than a few days) for instructions on how to do it only with the tools
provided with XFree86 (without using any specific Red Hat tools, that is).
