Well, I'm just generating hypotheses based on too little information which may or may not be true. (and, yes, it could be hardware -- a part of the X server that does a busy loop on a statusbit, for example, but with a partly dead graphics chip it hangs. I believe the misconfiguration hypothesis more, though.
