I'm posting this to the list in the hope that someone else may find it useful.

For the record, I have this working on an IBM ThinkPad T30 laptop with the ATI
Radeon M7 LW (Radeon Mobility 7500) running Debian unstable with XFree86
4.2.1, KDE 3.0.4.

On this setup I didn't have to do anything out of the ordinary to the actual
setup (no custom compiling or anything). It took me a little while figuring
out how to correctly set up XF86Config-4 and there is some sort of a problem
with initializing the display adapter. The problem description is that the
LCD screen started to flicker a lot and the image was fuzzy. The solution to
this is to unplug any external display during bootup of the machine, the LCD
will then work fine as well as the external display when hooked back up...
just don't have it plugged in when you're booting up. This may be specific
to my ThinkPad but it did give me a lot of grief so it should be pointed out
to anybody that is using this adapter (Nathaniel: it would be very much
appreciated if you either posted to the list or at least sent it to me
whether you have this problem on your Dell laptop... I'd like to know if it's
the IBM bios that's screwing up or if it is the display adapter / ati driver
that's not handling it right).

My XF86Config-4 is attached to this letter with comments about my "special
parts". These comments start with ##.

Notice that the Xinerama option is not turned on anywhere but in my "althingi"
layout. The reason for that is that in the other two layouts where I have an
external monitor, those monitors are not good enough to keep up with the LCD
in terms of resolution. Since I'm using KDE, having different resolutions on
the two screens poses a problem if you use Xinerama because kwin (the KDE
window manager) doesn't seem to be Xinerama aware and therefore creates
"dead" zones on the screen with the lower resolution. This resulted in me
loosing my panel because it got displayed in a "dead" zone and therefore I
have Xinerama turned off everywhere except at "althingi" because there I have
an external screen that is capable of displaying the same resolution as my
LCD (1400 x 1050).

I hope this post will help somebody getting dual monitor set up on the X
server. If there are any questions or comments please feel free to contact
me.

Just keep in mind my little problem with having an external monitor hooked up
at bootup time. Please let me know if other laptop brands behave this way
too.

Regards, Stefan Freyr.
