The crash occurred after I had switched from the X console to another virtual terminal console. I was running mozilla and Sun StarOffice 5.2 at the time.

You are hitting same problem as I did here on FreeBSD with i815. Only that I have this occuring every time I go to text console from KDE 3.* starting screen (and frequently when I go to console from the KDE itself). Same diagnostics -- space lacking 8 something and server lockup (in i810 accel.c code).

Now, someone told me to use "XaaNoSolidFillRect" but it's of no use.
I tried to go further and disabled hardware acceleration completely. That seemed to help a bit but didn't solve the problem.
It seems to me that problem occurs when something is placing heavy load on X -- and on i810 driver therefore.
But one has to be developer of the driver to understand it. :)
