Greetings, A colleague and I are trying to get our ATI Radeon cards working with xfree 4.2.99.3 at resolutions greater than 1280x1024 through the DVI interface (to drive LCD monitors). We are both trying to avoid the ATI binary drivers (bad experiences with instability with the NVidia binary drivers have led both of us to stronly prefer free source versions of the drivers, if possible), and are trying to get this to work with the xfree drivers instead. However, if someone HAS gotten these higher resolutions to work with the binary-only drivers, that would also be a data point in which we would be interested, if all else fails.
Neither of us want to run AcceleratedX, with its subtle but annoying incompatabilities with certain libraries and software. We prefer xfree, pure, sans binary drivers, for the best compatability (we both run Gentoo, we can and do compile xfree from scratch, along with cvs versions of DRI, etc.) In my colleague's case, he is attempting to get his Radeon 8500 to run at 1600x1024 on an SGI 1600SW monitor, however, the DFP stuff seems to ignore the modelines he's defined, and does not detect any VESA modelines automoatically. I am in a similiar circumstance, trying to get an ATI 8500-DV to run at 1920x1200 on a Samsung 24" monitor, and despite using modelines which worked perfectly for an NVidia card (which I am retiring because of stability problems with the binary driver, and limitations of the xfree driver ... no DFP output, no hi-res), I have also had no luck getting the DVI interface to provide anything greater than 1280x1024. Does anyone have any tips or pointers on how to drive these cards at higher resolutions through the DVI digital interface (NOT Analog!)? Or perhaps a pointer to an explanaition of exactly how DVI is handled by xfree (vs. analog, as the two appear to behave very differently for some drivers, eg. ATI). many thanks in advance from both of us. Jean. _______________________________________________ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
