[XFree86] Strange Video Problems

I am running:   XFree86 4.2.0 Redhat Linux 8.0 ATI Mach64 GX PCI 2Meg P 233MMX 256 Meg 32 Gig Seagate HD Samsung 1200NF 22" Monitor     X windows wont do anything over 8 bit color, in RH 7.0 with whatever the standard X windows was it could do 24 bit color without a problem, after upgrading it gives me: adapter cant run in mode 16 errors or driver doesn't support mode 24 errors. But it does and did.   Any ideas, I have spent quite a bit of time on it but am not as familiar with linux as I would like to be.
