I'm trying to setup my graphics card to work with RedHat8 and I'm having
problems. I have a Dell D1626HT monitor which the manual says that can
display 1600x1200 at 85 Hz. I can connect PC running XP or Win2k and I have
no problems displaying that resolution at that refresh rate.

But I can't get RH to do the same.
I started with nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 card and RH default driver and I could
not get it configured. The only resolution that I could use was 1900X1450.
At any other resolution the screen was flickering so badly that I could not
look at it for more than a minute. I tried the nVidia drivers and the
result was the same. I tried to experiment with different ModeLine(s) and I
could not get it to work. Neither there was no change or X server would not
start. I stress that the card works perfectly under XP so there can't be
anything wrong with it.

Since I had an old Matrox G200 card I decided to try it. It worked perfect.
But I wanted something better than an old G200 so I swapped my GeForce2 MX
400 card for my dad's Matrox G400. I thought that since my old G200 worked
perfect it would be easier to get it to work. Unfortunately that wasn't he
case. The flickering is still here not as much pronounced as with nVidia
card but it's there. I've tried RH8 drivers and Matrox drivers but no
change.
Again I tried different values for the ModeLine with various results (I
found this web site http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl that
generates Modeline(s)). I found that only line line sort of works for me:

ModeLine "1600x1200@70" 221.02 1600 1632 2464 2496 1200 1223 1237 1261
+hsync +vsync

But that is only 70 Hz refresh rate. I'd like to go higher than that but I
can't if I try to increase the refresh rate the X server usually does not
start.

The thing that I'm getting confused about is the "pixel clock". When I run
mgsdesk it tells me that the max pixel clock is 229 but when I look in the
the X log file it says that 360. Which one to believe ?

II) MGA(0): clock: 28.3 MHz Image Size: 388 x 291 mm

When I create a ModeLine with Pixel Clock greater than 229 the X server
won't start. But without going above 229 I can't increase refresh rate
beyond 70 Hz.

Can somebody help ? Am I missign something ? Has anybody managed to get G400
working with RH8 at resolution 1600x1200 at refresh rates above 70 Hz ? I
would like to see their XF86Config file.

Thanks - Tom
