I posted a bug report on January, 16th, the problem was that the
X server 4.2.0 and 4.2.1 aborts with sig11 about once in a week.

Original message was:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00391.html

I compiled the X server with debug symbols and waited for a crash.
Inspection of the core file shows that the problem is caused by
a NULL pointer dereference.

Look at the file Free86-4.2.1/xc/lib/font/fc/fserve.c:

function _fs_load_glyphs() calls fs_send_open_font():
   2186
   2187 /* Now try to reopen the font. */
   2188     return fs_send_open_font(client, (FontPathElementPtr)0,
   2189                  (Mask)FontReopen, (char *)0, 0,
   2190                  (fsBitmapFormat)0, (fsBitmapFormatMask)0,
   2191                  (XID)0, &pfont);
   2192     }
   2193

and function fs_send_open_font() is here:
   1490 static int
   1491 fs_send_open_font(pointer client, FontPathElementPtr fpe,
                Mask flags,
   1492           char *name, int namelen,
   1493           fsBitmapFormat format, fsBitmapFormatMask fmask,
   1494           XID id, FontPtr *ppfont)
   1495 {
   1496     FSFpePtr            conn = (FSFpePtr) fpe->private;
   1497     FontPtr         font;
   1498     FSBlockDataPtr      blockrec = NULL;
   1499     FSBlockedFontPtr        bfont;
   1500     FSFontDataPtr       fsd;
   1501     FSFontPtr           fsfont;
   1502     fsOpenBitmapFontReq     openreq;
   1503     fsQueryXInfoReq     inforeq;
   1504     fsQueryXExtents16Req    extreq;
   1505     int             err;
   1506     unsigned char       buf[1024];
   1507
   1508     if (conn->blockState & FS_GIVE_UP)
   1509     return BadFontName;

Please note that the second argument 'fpe' of the type
'FontPathElementPtr' is passed as a null ptr in the line 2188 and
is dereferenced in the line 1496 in the expression 'fpe->private'
obviously causing segmentation violation.

I hope this helps the XFree86 developers to make a patch.

I'd like to thank Peter Finderup Lund for his help.

        Vlado
