Hi -- I'm trying to track down the cause of a drop in video performance on a
linux box, with a G400.

x11perf results have dropped significantly, and video streaming applications
(xine, mplayer) that used to run w/o problem are now struggling to keep up with
the frame rate and burning a lot more cpu than they did previously.

I made the following changes to the machine:

o Moved from RH7.1 to RH8.0
  kernel-smp 2.4.9 -> 2.4.18
  xfree86    4.1.0 -> 4.2.0

o Moved filesystems from ext2 -> ext3
o Added a usb audio device
o Added a hard drive
o Stopped using fb for console. I used the mga driver for X in both cases.

Things I've tried, that haven't had any effect:

o Using the 4.1.0 mga driver from rh7.1
o Using the 4.1.0 X server and mga driver from rh7.1
o Using the 2.4.9 kernel-smp rpm from rh7.1
o Loading the fb dev, while still using the mga driver in X (same as my old
  setup)
o Mounting all filesystems as ext2 and leaving kjournald off.

I've checked that /proc/mtrr is setup.

Here's a typical difference in x11perf results. It doesn't matter which XFree86
tree I'm using (4.1.0 or 4.2.0) to generate the 2nd column. The larger tests
are consistently slower than they used to be:

9280000.0   8710000.0 (  0.94)   Dot
2540000.0   2550000.0 (  1.00)   1x1 rectangle
1750000.0   1220000.0 (  0.70)   10x10 rectangle
196000.0    99000.0 (  0.51)   100x100 rectangle
 14500.0     6460.0 (  0.45)   500x500 rectangle
2660000.0   2670000.0 (  1.00)   1x1 stippled rectangle (8x8 stipple)
1750000.0   1220000.0 (  0.70)   10x10 stippled rectangle (8x8 stipple)
196000.0    99100.0 (  0.51)   100x100 stippled rectangle (8x8 stipple)
 14500.0     6460.0 (  0.45)   500x500 stippled rectangle (8x8 stipple)

Has anyone seen this sort of pattern before? Any ideas what the problem
could be?
