John,
After going to the expense of replacing a very good graphics card with another good graphics card and it still won't work, do you suppose it could be your Mandrake or the way it is set up? I have an ATI 7200 card that has worked flawlessly since installing it with SuSE. I had a nvidia prior to that and went thru the nvidia binary driver hell so many people have experienced. Check to see if your Mandrake is providing basic nv drivers and if not, download the nvidia binary drivers from their site to install and test. SuSE supplies generic nvidia drivers, but recommend for optimum results get the binary drivers as I suspect many here would suggest.
