VERSION:

R6.6 XFree 4.30 (i386 architecture)

     CLIENT MACHINE and OPERATING SYSTEM:

generic Linux, kernel 2.4.20 on i386 (hardware description below)

     DISPLAY TYPE:

XF86_*

     WINDOW MANAGER:

IceWM 1.26

     COMPILER:

gcc 2.95.3

     AREA:

DRI/DRM management for ATI Radeon cards

     SYNOPSIS:

The problem seems to be located "between" the radeon dri part and the
DRM kernel module.

     DESCRIPTION:

USING RADEON.O AS SUPPLIED IN THE SOURCE TREE OF XFREE 4.30 :
=============================================================

Starting glxgears gives me :
480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 96.000 FPS

The /var/log/XFree86.0.log gaves me the following hint:

The according device is set as follows:

crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 226, 0 Feb 28 12:53 /dev/dri/card0

I tried this as root and as user....both failed as shown above.

ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86:

-rws--x--x 1 root root 1904718 Feb 28 04:50 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86

so, the sticky bit is set.

I cannot figure out, what the reason is for "Permission denied".

This is rated as BUG since everything works so far with XFree
4.2.1. or in other words: The radeon driver of XF 4.2.1 had other bugs

USING RADEON.O AS SUPPLIED BY THE LINUX 2.4.20 KERNEL SOURCES
=============================================================

This kernel drm/dri driver has not such problems, but it is found by
XFree as being too old and thereofore some dri features are switched
of. Glxgears gives me about 200 FPS, though....

     REPEAT BY:

I did the following:
Compile and install Linux 2.4.20 kernel with agpart and dri for radeon
module enabled, built and installed.

Compile and installed XFree 4.30 as described.
Go to xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/drm/kernel/ and
did a make -f Makefile.linux as given when 'make' alone.
Installed resulting radeon.o driver in place the one decribed above.
Start X as root with 'startx' from runlevel 2 of my already running
Linux box.
Start glxgear as a check. Found lack of perfomance. Check the log
file. Found bug as described above.

My hardware consists mainly of:

Athlon 2400+ XP
EPox 8K5A3+ motherboard (VAI KT333 chipset)
ATI Radeon 7500 65MB DDR RAM AGP (built by Sapphire)
256 DDR RAM (Samsung)

cat /proc/pci gave me:
