I just did the hack and replaced nv_drv.o and behavior is back to "normal" so
I suspect that perhaps the Sony GDM-500PS is at fault due to a DPMS bug and
that the driver/card may be behaving properly. Weird, but that's the fun of
dealing with an infinite number of hardware combinations.
Unfortunately I'm not aware of what the driver/card are doing differently as I
would think hsync/vsync off when the card is forced into DPMS off would be the
same as the "old" DPMS all-or-nothing VGA behavior; strange...
