Dr. Andrew C Aitchison responded to me, but did not CC me. As I am not on the list, this will start yet another thread.
Dr. Aitchison is correct. The first time I compiled as a user,
compiling xcursorgen did fail, for lack of png.h. That halted
compilation (I no longer have that log). I resolved that by installing
the png devel package, and went on to complete the compilation. None
the less, xcursorgen still wasn't there when I tried to install.
He also says that make is run -k. I took my command line ("make World
>& world.log") straight out of the installation instructions, which do
not have a -k in them. So I was not expecting to have to search for
errors. I now know I ought to have removed that in the top level
makefile. Something else for the installation instructions, perhaps?
When I re-compile anew as root, png.h was there and all other
dependencies ought to have been satisfied, and everything went
fine. None the less, there was still compilation at installation.
I still have my log files if anyone would like them.
