I have had considerable problems starting XFree86, either in VGA or in any other mode. I have sometimes been able to get half a screen working in a very large font, running gdm, but have had limited success elsewhere.
I originally downloaded and installed Debian with XFree86 v 3.x where it was the most recent release of XFree86. I also downloaded and installed XFree86 v4.2.99.3 Attached find the most recent log files. Although some of them record the DAC type as IBM the utility supplied by S3 reports the DAC Type being TI TVP 3026 which is the TI DAC.
