You probably need to set your X resolution down to something the TV can handle (< 800x600) and you may need to use atitvout. [worked for me on a Thinkpad A20p/r128 M3] If you're on a laptop, the radeon driver may share a bug w. the r128 driver (well, I say the driver, it's just as much the BIOS' fault) which causes it to silently reject low res modes.
