I ran into the same trap - but sometimes it worked but was very "snowy".
I was shocked when I read that G550 simply does not support DVI-D at
this resolution:
DVI output
* Supports cutting-edge digital flat panels with resolutions up to
1280 x 1024 (main display)

I bought G550 because of its signal quality - now, as with DVI-D
analogue signals do no longer matter, I am running an Asus V8420 (GF4
Ti4200) that supports DVI-D at 1600x1200 well.
