you need to start your font server (xfs) or put (at least the first
of) these lines in your XF86Config-4 in the "Files" section:

        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscaled"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
