Both SuSE and RH have their own configuration tools. I would not guarantee
XF86Config works on RH, and cannot speak for SuSE. Have you tried X -configure
as root?
If that locks up, then having a serial or network connection to log the output
will help, so we can see the final printouts of the server. I suspect your log
file is truncated.
Having said all that, ViRGE has had some trouble with the monitor probing. If
you have entered Horiz and Vert frequencies into your XF86Config file, then try
adding Option "noddc" to the Monitor section and report the result.
