I am running redhat 8.0 on a Pentium 4 (533) as a file server to a network of primarily MacIntosh computers. This morning we lost access to the server. I rebooted it at which point I received the following message:
"I coud not start the X server (your graphical environment) due to some internal error. Please contact your system administrator or check your syslog to diagnose. In the meantime this display will be disabled. Please restart gdm when"
followed by:
"RGGzuGGS"
I am able to log in locally as a client and as the superuser with only a text interface. When I attempt to start the GUI (startx) I get the following message:
"PAM authentication failed, cannot start x server. Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
giving up.
xinit: Nosuch file or directory (errnno 2): unagel to connect to x server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error"
I am afraid I have no other details to offer as I am new to the world of Linux and to Unix, in general. I am trying to find the command in order to display my syslog information.
