[XFree86] I want to Post a message about X-windows

I have run a shell script under X-windows. It is currently running fine 
under HP-UX xwindows.I am trying to tranport it into Linux.
I would like to know how do I enable X-windows on Linux and run this 
shell script under it,
Anybody can offer some help?
