I used to have a working system with this card (old debian setup, old
machine). I decided to try a new linux version and got XFree86 4 along
with. To my dismay, it doesn't work with it...

Is there any hope? Or, am just forced to stick with my old version?
Or, would some XFree86 v3 work for me?

Just extract from the log.. the trouble seems to be with RAMDAC IBM
525.
