sorry for the delay, but I'm not on the list, just reading archives...

anyway, what I actually tried is to write into app-defaults/Knews:

*arttree.baseTranslations:      #augment \n\
        <Btn1Down>:     set-selected() \n\
        <Btn4Down>:     select() mark-unread-thread() \n\
        <Btn5Down>:     select() mark-read-thread() \n\
        <ButtonPress>(6):       select() mark-unread-thread() \n\
        <Btn3Down>:     toggle-outer()

where previously instead of <ButtonPress>(6) there was
only written <Btn6Up> till I noticed that this is an
invalid expression and nowhere to be found in X-sources.
now button 4 does mark the thread unread, button 5
does mark it read, while the scroll-wheel doesn't do
anything until I move it by 6 "ticks" into any direction,
whereby the thread is marked unread. [I'll try using
(6)(1) instead of (6) later, but I doubt it'll help]

however, when I forward raw mousedata from gpm which
was started with the imps2-protocol (as opposed to
killing it before starting X), then buttons 4 and 5
as well as wheel-down do nothing, while wheel-up does
work correctly (i.e. only the wheel works correctly)...

btw, Knews-sources are available at
