If I recall correctly this is because security on your
system is too great to allow the X-window system to run.
The X-server doesn't have permission to do things it needs
to do, like open /dev/mem.

    I'm not a FreeBSD person, however, and don't know details.
This is only my recollection of previous analysis by others
of this problem.
