I did run XFree86 -configure  to initialize it and then ran the test.
I can't run startx but I can get a GUI with xdm -X
Thanks for the help.

Subject: [XFree86] trouble with XFree

I have a problem with my RedHat 9.0 configuration of my Matrox G2+ video card.
When I run
XFree86 -xf86config XF86Config.new, I get a mouse cursor as an X, that can be moved across the screen, but no other video.
To get out of this, I hit the CRTL-ALT-BACKSPACE keys.
In addition to the error message below, I get:
(EE) MGA(0): [drm] Direct redering only supported with G200/G400/G550/ AGP
Thanks for all your help,
Kathleen Ayala

^^^^^^^ there is your problem...... no config file. try just running /usr/X11/bin/XF86Config directly to create a config file then start X with either 'X' or 'startx'  I have a millinum II card from matrox and it works fine.  and dont worry about the Direct rendering error thats just telling you that X cant directly send 3-d rendering commands to the card, it would have to use a software driver instead of a the hardware/direct drivers
