I am an ATI fan now: I use a Radeon 9000 (R250If) for dual head. It works fine
with Xinerama, but no 3d acceleration (because DRI and Xinerama don't work
together). *However*, I use mergedfb
(http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=276) to provide hardware accelerated
3d across both heads. I imagine this will be in the next release of XFree86,
but otherwise, you can download updated drivers that drop in on top of XFree
4.3 from the URI mentioned at the bottom of the bug.

A dual head 32MB Radeon 7000 (1xDVI, 1xVGA) (the cheapest ATI option that can
do dual head (I think)) should cost as little as $42 ... a 128MB dual head
Radeon 9000 perhaps $72 ... or you could get something faster for more money!
$160 should get you a Radeon 9600 128MB with 1xDVI, 1xVGA. I believe DRI
doesn't work with these though - so you'd need to use the other 3D drivers -
and I've lost the URI for them (I think it's somewhere in Germany).

I do wish they'd just put two DVI connectors on boards these days (Apart from
really good boards that have 30-bpp colour capability ... at which point
analogue is preferable!) Does anyone know what cards are available with
dual-DVI output?

HTH,
