I just
installed Mandrake 9.1 with KDE and the screen flickers really badly. Without
even starting KDE, I can type "XFree86" and the flicker is already there.
Here's what I've tried so far:
1. Set
everything up through Mandrake and chose my exact make and model from the choice
list (Gateway EV700).
2. Chose "ATI Mach64 3D Rage Pro" - the exact model
of my video card - from the Mandrake choice list.
3. Tried
choosing "Generic 1024 x 768"
4. Tried different display settings such as 800 x
600, and different color settings - 24 bit, 16 bit, etc.
5. Renamed the
XF86Config file and recreated it using the command "XFree86
-configure"
6. Created a modeline by entering monitor specs at http://xtiming.sourceforge.net, and added it to the
"Monitor" section of the XF86Config file.
7. Changed from using XFree 4.3 to XFree
3.3.6
8. Ran "xvidtune" and fiddled with the settings.
No matter what I do, the screen still flickers - although
it does not flicker when running a shell, and the same computer and monitor
were flicker free using Windows 2000 right before changing to Linux. The problem
seems to be with XFree86 but I have no idea what else to do. Below are my
monitor specs:
Model: Gateway EV700
Horiz Sync Rate: 30-69 khz
Vert Sync Rate: 50-120
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Refresh Rate: 60hz at 1280x1024, 85hz at 1024x768
non-interlaced
Video bandwidth: 70 MHz nominal (I saw another website that
said 80 Mhz - I tried that too)
Any suggestions?
Thanks
