To provide some background, I have two Dell Inspiron 5000e Laptops. In
July, I installed RedHat 9 on the first one and it runs X with out a
hitch. Over the weekend, I tried to install RedHat 9.0 with the default
XFree86 packages on the second Laptop. X Would not start. I searched
the net long and hard and discovered that there were several pleas for
help, but no real solutions. The common error message was "Screen(s)
found, but none have a usable configuration." This morning, I compared
both configs and found something was missing from the config on the
second laptop:
DisplaySize 13 11
Added the DisplaySize line and ensure all the modes were added in the
Screen Section:
Modes "1600x1200" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864"
"1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
I saved the file and restarted X. It works.
I am including the entire working XF86Config file for future reference.
I hopefully this will save others and myself some angst in the future.
