Try this:

as root

1) backup & delete all XF86Config* files in /etc/X11
2) run XFree86 -configure
3) copy /root/XF86Config.new to /etc/X11 as XF86Config-4
4) delete symbolic link /etc/X11/X
5) and create new one, so it points to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86

My experience: XFdrake (X configurator) is not that mighty as it may
look....

(Maybe you will need to manualy edit keyboard and pointer
(input devices) section in the new X config file according to
the old one to meet your mouse & locale requirements -
- XFdrake sets this well... but XFree86 -configure don't
(at least my logitech USB/PS/2 optical mouse din't work and kb
layout is set to default (us))

I hope this will help you....

                                Nyyr
