Greetings, Let me state up front that I am a newie to the inner workings of XFree86, so please bear with me if my questions seem obvious.
My hardware incorporates the Intel 82845GV chipset. I have installed Red Hat 9 and SuSe 9 on this hardware and have encountered no VT switching problems. However, with Xandros 2, the VTs are unusable (only a row of short vertical lines are displayed at the top of the screen). Xandros tech support has completely blown me off, stating the problem is the i810 driver. But from what I've seen on the XFree86 website, it appears that most of the VT switching problems with the i810 driver have been corrected by version 4.3.0, which is the version Xandros, Red Hat, and SuSe are using. I suspect the problem is actually that Xandros is using an odd video mode (800x600 37.9kHz 60Hz). While this is a VESA Guidelines video mode, it is not a VESA Standards video mode. Several references on the XFree86 website state that the i810 driver makes use of the video BIOS to program video modes. Although I have yet to find an specific information on what video modes the BIOS supports, I suspect the mode Xandros is using is not supported. I cite the following reasons: * Red Hat uses a 720x400 31.5kHz 70Hz video mode (VESA Standard) and works perfectly. * SuSe uses a 1280x1024 64.0kHz 60Hz video mode (VESA Standard) and works perfectly. * If I start Xandros in single user mode and then execute 'init 5' to start X, it uses a 720x400 31.5kHz 70Hz video mode (VESA Standard) and works perfectly. So my questions for the experts are: * Does the discussion above make sense and point to a probable cause? * Does anyone know where the video mode for the VTs are configured and how I would change them to a VESA Standard video mode if my suspicion is correct?
