That is actually normal. :) If there are no programs to be loaded (like a windowmanager or xterm), startx will display a gray screen with a mouse pointer. If you want to load a windowmanager (like GNOME, KDE), you'll have to run it manually or from your .xinitrc. If you want, I could send you a copy of my SuSE .xinitrc to give you an idea (I won't post it to the list). Just let me know.
