[XFree86] Dual head issue

I have a dual head system running on Redhat 7.3. The problem I have is 
that one screen comes up fine, and the other is a grey pattern. The 
mouse will cross onto the grey screen , but the desktop will not use 
that monitor. I can manually start another desktop on that monitor. Does 
anyone know why gnome won't span both heads automatically. I have tried 
using different cards, and multiple cards and different card vendors.
