[XFree86] Jumpy mouse

I have 4.2.0 running on Slackware Linux 8.1. Whenever
I try to use the moue in X, it always jumps around,
usually to the nearest corner, and acts as if the left
button is being held down. This isn't a very fancy
mouse - an ordinary Logitech PS/2 optical. I've never
seen this happen with other Linux distros or on
different versions of Xfree86. What gives?
