Hi, For any interested, I have finally managed to get XFree86 4.3 running with my old Fire GL 1000 Pro video card.
I was using the wrong driver, vga. Under XFree86 V3 I had been using the 3Dlabs driver and a color depth of 32. Under XFree86 V4+, 3Dlabs is no longer available. Support for Permedia is provided by the glint driver. I had actually tried the glint driver before, but with a depth of 32, which it does not support. The glint driver works fine with a depth of 24.
