Dear Mark, I still have the same problem. In fact, I can not start the DESKTOP environment even tough I run the switchdesk command, which give me to choose between KDE and Gnome. But after rebooting my pc I still have the same problem. Afterwards, I have removed the entire package included in the user interface (X), which contains the previous version of Xfree and also some desktop environments. After that I tried to re-install the XFree86-4_4_0, but I have this error: Can't build the drm Kernel: The build.log shows: Makefile: 141:***Cannot find a kernel config file.

Installing XFree86 installs a /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc which probably overwrote the choice of desktop environment your Linux distribution set up. Your Linux distribution should have a script/app to reselect the desktop environment. On redhat, I think this was called "switchdesk". Failing that, you can always start the desktop enviroment explicitly at the end of the xinitrc file. Mark.
