does this file exist?
  `/etc/X11/XF86Config-4'
or
  `/etc/X11/XF86Config'
?

if no such file,
then run `XFree86 -configure' as root,
then look for `XF86Config.new' in current dir,
copy this file into `/etc/X11', and rename it, say:

  cp XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Cofig-4

restart X.

upon any problem , please post both the config file
and the logfile.
