In general, that's not supported. One would have to write
a new driver with backwards compatibility explicitly in mind
(avoid using features that weren't present in 4.0.3, etc...).
Sometimes you get lucky and are able to build a slightly newer
driver with an older server, but you've got a gap of years
between your server and the driver you want to use...
