Thanks for the info.
Adjusting the mode name results in exactly the same effect - ie no mode of
this name.
Adjusting the Virtual to 1280 1024 results in a different log message of
having a larger virtual but it still has the same effect - it chooses
640x480 and complains about other mode names (eg "1024x768") which it has
previously detected but indicates no mode of this name.
Any other ideas?
(I'll resend the config and log files if requested)

First, "1024x1280JCH" != "1280x1024JCH".
Secondly, your Virtual specification will limit the physical modes you can end
up with.
