[XFree86] Change default colormap entries > 256

I would like to know how to change the default colormap entries to a
number larger than 256 and allocate 512 or 1024 color cells in
DirectColor.

I can already make a private colormap linked to the non-default visual
in DirectColor.

And run the xserver in Direct or TrueColor, but can not allocate more
than 256 cells at a time.

 

Any help is appreciated,
