I have no objection to the proposed return value.
But IMHO there is a safer way, ie. to use the second (optional) parameter 
passed by reference.

eg.
__run(cCommand, @nExitcode)

This way it doesn't break Clipper compatibility, while extend the functionality 
of __run()
