Count me in.
I'll be happy to do the UML design docs. I'm using ArgoUML unless someone knows of a better open source design tool.
I haven't used xindice yet but I'm working on a project that needs it. I should be installing and rolling it in this week.

If anybody is interested I would like to build a SOAP interface to xindice, I am thinking the SOAP interface could be via a servlet (although xindice doesn't have an embeded servlet container, we could just run through tomcat for now).
Some of the functions (operations) could be.
1. createCollection(); 2. queryCollection(); 3. retrieveDocument(); 4. storeDocument();
All bi-driectional via a SOAP message.
Anybody want to help me with this?

Basically, you just need to find something that you think is interesting, make your interest known and then work on it using this mailing list for discussion. Take a look at http://xml.apache.org/overview.html for some more guidelines on how the Apache process works.
