No you're not. There may still be some cases where a pool of connections would be valuable, but in most cases it won't be necessary.
Is it worth cleaning up the pool in the meantime, getting it into the repository, and making it downloadable? I'm using it for at least one application at the moment, given 1.1 won't be released in the immediate future, so I'd be happy to do so.
