One simple thought on interchangablity of filers would be to implement a berkeley db filer. I am not familiar with sleepycat's new XML db, but even if it's just the standard berkeley db v4, I think it would be an interesting example of interchangable filers. Also, I suspect that having a standard technology like berkeley db as the storage mechanism (or even just the option of using bdb) would make companies more willing to adopt Xindice.
