Agreed. I wouldn't switch to Avalon for the configuration alone. But this might be a good starting point to migrate the overall architecture to Avalon, which is IMHO a very good server framework.
If we are to go the "pluggable way", Avalon is definitely worth looking, it would allow to focus more on logic than on component glue code. I'm +1 to it, and more than willing to help (I have some experience: I'm using Avalon extensively and I learnt to appreciate its features - as well as understanding its shortcomings).
