On the optional note, what are we planning on doing for 'real' projects that are not just scratchpads, but are not part of the core?

I agree with the 'optional' notion, but I think they should be self contained projects, with configs and builds, jars, and any other resources. I would like to get the eclipse UI into this area. The 'scratchpad' sounds too alpha, and too unsupported for projects that have some maturity.

+1.  I think it makes everyone happy.

If we go into that direction (release of the core + optional versions), we should IMO move the jars into the folders:

xml-xindice/lib/core
xml-xindice/lib/endorsed
xml-xindice/lib/optional

like it's done in the xml-forrest and xml-cocoo2 [...] projects (but it's not urgent and can be done incrementally as we update the jars).
