I agree with the 'optional' notion, but I think they should be self contained projects, with configs and builds, jars, and any other resources. I would like to get the eclipse UI into this area. The 'scratchpad' sounds too alpha, and too unsupported for projects that have some maturity.

If we go into that direction (release of the core + optional versions), we should IMO move the jars into the folders:
xml-xindice/lib/core xml-xindice/lib/endorsed xml-xindice/lib/optional
like it's done in the xml-forrest and xml-cocoo2 [...] projects (but it's not urgent and can be done incrementally as we update the jars).
