I'm still striving to understand what's exactly happening but it's a bit troublesome since my only access to a Solaris machine is via a slow line, so it's a bit painful to code&debug with a mere shell access and no debugging tools. However now it *seems* that I can make it in storing the documents correctly, but I still have problems in retrieval...

Try out the source code that I just checked into CVS. You'll have to wipe and and recreate your collections, but I believe it should work.
