I am encountering the same error as Jonathan Mark is seeing, and I'm on JVM 1.4 as well.
However, when I visited that Sun URL cited above, the instructions say (emphasis added):
"The Endorsed Standards Override Mechanism may be used to override the J2SE platform packages in the list below, and these packages may be overriden only by versions of the endorsed standard that are *newer* than that provided by the Java 2 Platform as released by Sun."
If the problem is that Xindice is using an *older* Xalan, will the ESOM be able to help?
I'm going to continue poking around, but suggestions are welcome!
BTW, Xindice is really cool!
