Yes, I do call close() on the collection before exit. The flow of my program
is a more or less direct adaptation of the example programs of Xindice.

The problem could be related to the JVM on the server side being to slow
with its garbage collection, I suppose, since the problem is only seen after
a periode of continuously ongoing queries. Just a theory :-)
